Micro-adventure: the revival of tourism?

Criteria for choosing a micro-adventure close to your accommodation and the information to give guests before they leave.

The essentials. A micro-adventure is a short outing that lets you discover a nearby place, sometimes at the last minute. To recommend one to your guests, check the return journey, the cost, opening times and the weather, then give a precise starting point. Proximity does not guarantee a low budget or low environmental impact: transport and activities also count.

A micro-business can help you discover a place near you, even if you decide to set off at the last moment. During holiday periods, advise your guests to check the cost of the journey and activities: depending on their choices, budget and preparation can still be modest. Also look at the mode of transport and the activities on site to estimate the stay’s environmental impact. Leaving close to home does not guarantee low cost or low impact.

What criteria should you check before recommending a micro-adventure?

Start with the journey, then look at what the outing requires on site. A micro-adventure can satisfy a desire to disconnect and return to simplicity, to the essentials. If you want to limit its environmental impact, check how your guests will travel and which activities you offer them.

The micro-adventure can fit into sustainable tourism, but proximity alone is not enough to reduce environmental impact. Check the cost of the journey and the activities separately: a nearby outing is not necessarily inexpensive. To limit impact, favour journeys without a car when possible and activities that respect the places visited. ADEME recommends considering destination and mode of transport together.

Here are the checks that genuinely change the advice you give to the guest:

The table also serves to rule out an attractive idea on a map that is impractical from the accommodation. The return bus will not extend its service just for the sunset.

How to offer micro-adventures to your guests?

Suggest a few outings you know well, each with its start point and return journey. Your guests can discover new nearby places without arranging a long stay. Advise them to calculate the cost of the journey and activities before they go: a short trip is not necessarily inexpensive.

Find out what your town or region has to offer to suggest nearby outings to your guests. Knowing your local area better will help you advise them; they may also show you places they already know. To find ideas without using a ready-made list, consult for example our ideas for outdoor activities in the Pyrenees, then check what is accessible from your accommodation.

The shorter the stay, the more people want to make the most of it. An outing near the gîte can fill a free afternoon without organising a long trip. Discover historic monuments, lesser-known museums or small restaurants you might not have tried following a guide.

If you want to offer this type of short experience to your guests, the module "Around me" in StyQR lets you list activities near you: restaurants, walks, viewpoints and shops. Our article on the module dedicated to the area around the accommodation shows the place your personal recommendations take there. It is a product feature, not a substitute for checking routes on your behalf.

Near your gîte, recommend a short walk to a viewpoint or a stroll around a neighbourhood you know well. A lesser-known museum or a small restaurant can also give a reason to go out. For each suggestion, indicate where to start, how to get there and whether equipment or booking is needed.

For a car-free micro-adventure, state whether the departure is accessible on foot, by bike or by public transport from the accommodation, and how long the journey takes. Also check the return journey. If schedules are inconvenient or the weather changes, suggest a walk leaving from the accommodation or an indoor outing.

To vary micro-adventures near your gîte, suggest a walk starting from the accommodation or a bike loop you know the route of. Also keep an indoor option, such as a museum, for days when the weather does not allow hiking. Preferably recommend routes you have tested yourself.

Check information that can change before adding it to your welcome book: opening times and days, prices, booking conditions. An address closed on the day of the visit will not help your guests. The points of interest around the accommodation module helps present your addresses, but your advice must remain accurate.

What information should be in the welcome book before departure?

Each outing idea should be actionable without a last-minute phone call. In your holiday rental welcome book, state for each local activity where it starts, how to get there from the accommodation and how much time to allow. Add opening times, price and booking conditions when they apply. Specify whether the journey is on foot, by bike or by public transport, and suggest an indoor alternative if the weather changes.

For a hike, add the route, estimated duration and difficulty level. Note tricky sections and explain how to reach the start if the route is not obvious. Invite your guests to check the weather before leaving. The French Hiking Federation reminds that equipment depends on the route’s difficulty and the hiker’s profile: therefore avoid labelling a walk as "easy for everyone" without knowing your guests.

You can share these directions in a shared document if your outings rarely change. A digital welcome book whose link remains the same after corrections becomes especially useful when opening times, addresses or your recommendations change during the season. To choose this format without redoing the comparison here, see the differences between digital welcome book and PDF.

What to do if the outing is no longer suitable?

Remove or replace the recommendation as soon as a crucial detail is no longer reliable: access to the start, return time, opening or trail conditions. Do not leave an outdated address visible while you look for a better option. A walk starting from the accommodation or a museum whose opening you have checked will be more helpful.

If a guest reports a change, verify it before updating the welcome book. Then correct the information wherever you shared it, including in any arrival message. The StyQR modules FAQ explains how to show or hide an address in "Around me". A closed museum remains an attractive façade. It is a much shorter outing.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a micro-adventure last? It can fit into an afternoon or occupy a short stay. For your guests, choose a duration that allows time to reach the start, enjoy the outing and return without rushing.

Should a micro-adventure be car-free? No. If a journey on foot, by bike or by public transport is possible, indicate it; otherwise, also provide the information needed to come by car. Do not present proximity as a guarantee of low impact.

How can I tell if a hike suits my guests? Describe its duration, difficulty level and tricky sections rather than simply calling it "easy". Guests can then judge according to their experience, equipment and the expected weather.

What if the weather changes at the last minute? Plan an alternative outing, for example a museum whose opening you have checked. If the return depends on public transport, also check the timetable before advising departure.

Should activities recommended in the welcome book be booked? This depends on each place. State the booking requirement when you have verified it and avoid promising that a spot will be available. Recheck the information if it can change during the season.
