Nouvelle-Aquitaine and its treasures

The régiontrip continues: we're heading to the west coast for this fifth stop, destination Nouvelle-Aquitaine.

Since the recent reform, Nouvelle-Aquitaine has been one of the largest regions in France. So as you'd imagine, there is plenty to do!

There's something for every taste, every interest and every style.A strong historical presence

If you love history, beautiful stonework and perfectly preserved heritage, you're in the right place!

Nouvelle-Aquitaine is home to a great many bastide towns and medieval villages kept in superb condition. It's also a great way to discover the region, as they're scattered across all four corners of it. Think of Collonges-la-Rouge in the Limousin, Villefranche-du-Périgord, the bastide of Monpazier and Sarlat-la-Canéda in the Dordogne, or Monflanquin in the Lot-et-Garonne.

But that's not all: we'd also recommend visiting the typical villages of the Basque Country. And stop off at Espelette to taste its famous pepper!

In this corner of France too, it's fair to say nature has been generous. Take the Lascaux caves in the Dordogne, known the world over for their paintings dating from the Palaeolithic period: no small thing! At the Orgues de Bort in the Limousin, and not forgetting the Pyrenees National Park, you simply can't be disappointed. And here's a little extra just for you: make a detour via Artouste and take the little train, the highest railway line in Europe.

The cliffs of Meschers sur Gironde, south of Royan, are another lovely find, with troglodyte cave dwellings open to visitors. For the best view of the white cliffs of Meschers, we'd suggest heading to the village of Talmont-sur-Gironde. Finally, the Kakuetta gorges, the Gouffre de Proumeyssac and the Dune du Pilat are must-sees for the eyes.

And if you're looking for a moment of relaxation, far from routine and the frenzy of everyday life, the Vézère valley or the Monts d'Ambazac will meet that need to get back to simplicity and be close to nature.A real holiday feel

Nouvelle-Aquitaine also means beaches, fine sand and seaside towns.

Among the region's unmissable towns, we'd mention first, on the Basque coast, Biarritz, Bayonne (don't forget to try Basque pelota during your stay), and also Hendaye and Hossegor for surf lovers. A little further north, a few kilometres from the beautiful city of Bordeaux, you'll find the Arcachon basin. Finally, Nouvelle-Aquitaine also means its wonderful islands. The Île de Ré and the Île d'Oléron are the best known, but the Île d'Aix and the lesser-known Île de Nôle shouldn't be missed either.A wide variety of activities

Nouvelle-Aquitaine is also a lively, family-friendly region.

It brings together a wide choice of parks, notably La Palmyre zoo, La Vallée des Singes, the Le Teich ornithological reserve and also the Île aux Oiseaux, reached aboard the Pinasse, the famous traditional boat of the Arcachon basin.

For fans of livelier activities, Nouvelle-Aquitaine has plenty to offer here too!

It's home to Walibi Sud-Ouest, the Futuroscope park and also the legendary fort of Fort Boyard off the coast of La Rochelle.

We couldn't talk about activities without mentioning the unmissable férias! Those of Bayonne, Dax and Mont-de-Marsan.
