What exactly is Gîtes de France®?

First of all, Gîtes de France® is:

  • Alabel
  • Abrand
  • Anetwork... ofhome-stayaccommodation in France and across Europe.

The Fédération nationale des Gîtes de France® (FNGF) association was set up in 1955 in the Basses-Alpes. The aim? To develop home-based tourist accommodation in France. Why? To fight against rural depopulation. The logic here is simple: if the countryside is abandoned in favour of the big cities, buildings risk falling into ruin. And yet, living in a city, people want to head back to the countryside at the weekend, so there has to be somewhere for city dwellers to stay. Hence the creation of gîtes to host them!

How do they work? They are run by département, with a national federation above them. The labels awarded (écogîtes and gîtes panda) and the classification are granted by each département.

They have their own classification system: here we do not talk about stars but about épis (1 to 5).

Frequently asked questions

What exactly is the Gîtes de France® label? It is at once a label, a brand and a network of homestay accommodation, in France and across Europe. It brings together gîtes and guesthouses spread across French departments.

How long has Gîtes de France® existed? The association was founded in 1955 in the Basses-Alpes, under the name Fédération nationale des Gîtes de France® (FNGF). Its original goal was to develop home-based tourist accommodation to fight rural depopulation.

How does the Gîtes de France® classification work? The network does not rate its accommodation in stars, but in épis (ears of wheat), from 1 to 5. This classification, like the labels awarded, depends on each departmental federation rather than the national body.

Who awards labels like écogîte or gîte panda? These labels are granted by each departmental federation, just like the épi classification. There is therefore no centralised, nationwide awarding process.

What are the values of Gîtes de France®? The network rests on four pillars: sharing, through quality hospitality; authenticity, to answer travellers’ search for genuine, friendly experiences; responsibility, geared towards sustainable tourism; and commitment, in support of local jobs and appeal.

How many properties does the Gîtes de France® network offer? The network has more than 56,000 properties, either gîtes or guesthouses. Travellers can also choose a stay by theme, such as unusual, prestige or gourmet.
